MARAD Small Shipyard Grant: Equipment Application Primer
How to frame an equipment project for a Small Shipyard Grant application.

This primer explains how to structure an equipment project, such as a robotic welding cell, for a MARAD Small Shipyard Grant application. It is not legal or grant advice. MARAD decides eligibility and awards; always follow the current Notice of Funding Opportunity.
Program Basics
- The program funds capital and related improvements at qualified small shipyards.
- This is a federal program with annual application cycles.
- Check the current Notice of Funding Opportunity for eligibility, matching requirements, deadlines and available funding.
Structure Your Project Description
1. Need
Describe the work that is constrained today: which weld families, how many hours, what quality or safety issues, and what demand you expect.
2. Project
Specify the equipment, installation, layout, training and schedule. Be concrete about what is purchased and how it fits your production flow.
3. Benefits
Quantify expected effects on capacity, efficiency and quality. Measured baselines are much stronger than estimates.
4. Budget
Itemize costs and identify the non-federal share and its source.
5. Readiness
Show that you can complete the project in the grant period: quotes, site preparation, staff and management commitment.
Common Mistakes
- Claiming benefits without data.
- Committing costs before confirming they are eligible under the current NOFO and award terms.
- Using outdated program guidance.
How a Study Helps
A weld-family study produces the baseline, project definition and benefit case. Catfish Vanguard can provide a technical section you adapt for your application. You remain the applicant, and no award is guaranteed.
